About.com interview is up

Cory Silverberg asked me some damn good questions about Sex 2.0, and the interview is now up at About.com. An excerpt:

On your website you describe Sex 2.0 as focusing on “the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality.” What does that mean exactly?

I hate to give an obtuse answer, but the truth is, what it means will be different for each individual. That’s why I’m excited that we have such a diverse group of people participating; everyone will get to offer their own perspective on how these things intersect in their own lives. Attendees can expect, first of all, not to be just passive attendees! Everyone is a participant at Sex 2.0. The focus is on interaction and discussion, rather than sitting back while “experts” talk at you. One of the fundamental concepts here is that everyone has things to teach and to learn. We have sessions scheduled on topics ranging from erotic writing to queer identity online to the effects the internet has had on the escorting industry, and much, much more!

Thanks, Cory!

Sex 2.0 podcast promos available

On the Promotion page, we’ve posted two audio promos that you can download and include in your podcasts. The 15-second promo is all business; no funny stuff. The 30-second promo has a little humor to it. Please include one of them in your podcast if the spirit moves!

We still need scholarship categories

Please help us think of categories for scholarships! Here’s what we have so far:

1. Newbie
2. Lurker
3. Nominated by other attendees
4. ???
5. ???

We need two more!

Here are some ideas that have been suggested:

- Sex podcaster
- Sex vlogger
- Conference virgin (someone who has never attended a conference before)
- Cutest Blog
- Clowniest Blogger

If you have ideas, please share them ASAP. We need to have the categories nailed down by the end of the year. Thanks!

Help us think of categories for Sex 2.0 scholarships!

As some of you might know, I’ve recently started a job as a community manager for a new sex-centric social networking site, thePEEQ.com. The site is currently in beta, and we have a fancier, more community/user-generated content version in the works.

If you’ve checked out Sex20con.com lately (um, in like the last day or two) you might have noticed that the PEEQ is the platinum sponsor for Sex 2.0. This means that the PEEQ is giving up $500 for scholarships to help offset the cost of travel and lodging for people who need it. I thought instead of covering all (or most) expenses for one person, we should give $100 to five different people so we can spread the love.

So here’s where the fun part comes in - how should we determine who these five people are? What kind of qualifications should they meet? I was thinking that we could have different categories for scholarship… like a scholarship for lurkers, maybe one for newbie bloggers… what else? Suggestions are more than welcome.

Cartoon of the day

Via Gaping Void, which surely we all love:

Please go to bed with me 2.0

Talk about nerdy. But that’s what this thing’s all about, people. If you think you’re coming to a snooty conference where people stand around silently sizing up who’s wearing the most punk-rock outfit, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Sex 2.0 2.0

Friday evening, I talked with a guy (not using his name at the moment in case he doesn’t want me to) who has coordinated lots of events and is very well-connected in terms of knowing people who would be interested in Sex 2.0. I told him some of the stuff I was stressing out about: how to get sponsors, how to make it look like an attractive venture without compromising what we want to do, what to do if we can’t get enough sponsors to cover the overhead costs, my worries that other people involved weren’t doing their fair share, and so on and so forth.

His advice?

Charge $10 admission rather than relying on sponsors to cover costs. That way, we’re not beholden to sponsors’ wants or squicks, and we can do it our way. As for the $10 admission, he said, if people say they’re not going to come because we’re charging $10, then they weren’t going to come in the first place, because that’s not a valid excuse. And if they really are pissed about such a paltry price, then we don’t want them there anyway. Also, people tend to be more invested in something if they have to pay, even if the price is low. For one thing that’ll make our headcount much more accurate.

Additionally, we can have vendor tables at a low cost. I think this is great, because one of the things I’ve wanted to do with this ever since I came up w/ the Sex 2.0 idea is showcase local sex-positive businesses and organizations. This way, that goal will be accomplished, and I won’t have to beg them for money. I know many of the places I have in mind don’t have the kind of money that we would need from sponsors, but I don’t want them to be excluded from the event, which is what would’ve happened with the old model.

All in all, I feel about 100 times better about Sex 2.0 after that conversation, and I have a renewed feeling of inspiration and vigor! This newly overhauled web site is a result of that inspiration!

So, once again, mark your calendars for April 12, 2008. Sex 2.0 is going to be an amazing event!!
